Check fraud is an increasing problem.  The Postal Service has actually cautioned against sending checks via the mail.

Many banks have responded to the problem by refusing to honor customers' claims regarding forged or altered checks.  In most cases, if a check is stolen from the mail, altered and cashed, the bank in which the check was deposited by the crook and the bank from which the check was payable are liable to reimburse the customer.  Their refusal to do so is improper, and in many cases attorney's fees are available by statute against the banks.  Please contact us if a bank is refusing to reimburse you.

Please note that there are short time limits on notifying the bank of a claim, and filing suit if it is not honored.  You should review your monthly statements and immediately notify the bank of any problems.
