Question: Is it possible to get out of a signed car lease within 72 hours of signing the lease? I leased a car yesterday. It has caused very serious family problems and I would love to get out of this if possible.
Answer: Illinois does not provide for any length of time to reconsider and cancel a contract for the lease or sale of a car. People think they have 3 days, but this is not the case. The only way in which you have a right to cancel a car transaction is if (a) there is a mortgage on your house as part of the car transaction (rare), (b) the dealer’s employees came to your house to get your signature (unusual but not unheard of), (c) if the dealer agreed to such a right (in writing, as a practical matter), or (d) (sometimes) if there is something wrong with the car.
